ca. 2084 – Earth’s global climate change has increased the intensity of tropical storms, resulting in catastrophic destruction and loss of life in the Caribbean and Gulf Coast regions. ICARUS is a research facility and colony for storm fighting drones which suppress hurricane activity and prevent mass destruction. Located in the stratopause, 33 miles above earth’s surface, ICARUS ties into earth’s first space elevator, providing ideal location for deployment to nearby storms in the area.

ICARUS houses a wide array of functions in a single facility. A permanent staff of over 300 scientists, researchers, pilots, mechanics and facility operations personnel work on board, ensuring constant support for the intense battle against destructive storms.

Utilizing advanced materials and structural principles, the design uses a composite external space frame captured between a membrane which encloses the inner space and the outer tether fibers along the path of the space elevator.
